🌿 Introduction: Lawn Advice Built for NJ — Not Just Google
Most lawn care tips you’ll find online are one-size-fits-all. But in New Jersey, with our acidic soils, high deer populations, and humid summers, that advice can actually make things worse.
After 30+ years caring for lawns in Northern NJ, I want to walk you through what works — and what doesn’t — right here at home.
🧠 What Makes NJ Lawns Unique?
✅ Soil pH: Often more acidic than ideal for turfgrass.
✅ Seasonal swings: Cold winters → humid summers = fungal issues.
✅ Tree coverage: Many yards are over-shaded.
✅ Deer pressure: Constant browsing damages turf and beds.
✅ High-end expectations: Landscapes are viewed as investments, not just décor.
🔍 Your Lawn Care Calendar: What to Focus On (By Season)
🌱 Spring (March–May)
- Apply pre-emergent weed control (but not too early!)
- Test soil pH — acidic soil may need lime, but don’t guess
- Begin mowing only once grass reaches 3+ inches
- Avoid aggressive dethatching — most lawns don’t need it
☀️ Summer (June–August)
- Water deeply, not daily — aim for 1″ per week
- Treat for grubs & lawn fungus early (before visible damage)
- Keep mowing height high (3.5″–4″) to prevent burning
- Watch for compaction in high-traffic areas
🍂 Fall (September–November)
- Core aeration + overseeding is critical for NJ fescue lawns
- Best time for liming — gives it time to work before spring
- Fertilize with a slow-release nitrogen blend
- Continue mowing until growth slows consistently
❄️ Winter (December–February)
- Avoid salting near lawn edges — it damages turf
- Tune-up irrigation systems for spring
- Plan renovations or landscaping projects early
- Evaluate drainage & slope if lawn struggles with ice/freeze cycles
🧪 Lawn Science: Don’t Skip the Soil Test
“One of the most cost-effective steps a homeowner can take is a soil test. We’ve seen lawns go from patchy to lush just by correcting pH.” – Stephen Costalos
You can send your soil sample to Rutgers Soil Lab. We’ll also walk through results with you, if you’d like expert guidance.
🦌 Lawn-Friendly vs. Deer-Destruction
Avoid common turf killers like:
- Hostas, tulips, and low groundcovers (deer snacks)
- Poorly placed fences that trap or corral deer
Instead, integrate:
- Fine fescues and tall fescues
- Taller plant barriers to break sightlines
🌿 Eco-Friendly & Noise-Resistant: Quiet Lawn Options
Electric and battery-powered mowing is not just trendy — it’s respectful. Our “Quiet Lawn” program means:
- No gas fumes
- Less neighborhood disruption
- Safe for pets, kids, and work-from-home setups
✅ Summary: Build a Lawn That Works Here — Not Everywhere
Northern NJ lawns have quirks — and advantages. With the right seasonal plan, soil care, and local knowledge, you can maintain a lawn that looks beautiful, adds value, and stands up to New Jersey’s challenges.
